From these data, network properties were determined for these relatively large neuronal networks. Based on these properties, we found that although ‘small-world’ network behavior existed throughout this time period, only average node degree and global efficiency correlate with the development of network bursting while clustering and local efficiency remained relatively constant.

Mapping Functional Connectivity between Neuronal Ensembles with Larval Zebrafish Transgenic for a Ratiometric Calcium Indicator
The ability to map functional connectivity is necessary for the study of the flow of activity in neuronal circuits. Optical imaging of calcium indicators, including FRET-based genetically encoded indicators and extrinsic dyes, is an important adjunct to electrophysiology and is widely used to visualize neuronal activity. However, techniques for mapping functional connectivities with calcium ima...
متن کاملBursting Reverberation as a Multiscale Neuronal Network Process Driven by Synaptic Depression-Facilitation
Neuronal networks can generate complex patterns of activity that depend on membrane properties of individual neurons as well as on functional synapses. To decipher the impact of synaptic properties and connectivity on neuronal network behavior, we investigate the responses of neuronal ensembles from small (5-30 cells in a restricted sphere) and large (acute hippocampal slice) networks to single...
متن کاملThe Interaction of Intrinsic Dynamics and Network Topology in Determining Network Burst Synchrony
The pre-Bötzinger complex (pre-BötC), within the mammalian respiratory brainstem, represents an ideal system for investigating the synchronization properties of complex neuronal circuits via the interaction of cell-type heterogeneity and network connectivity. In isolation, individual respiratory neurons from the pre-BötC may be tonically active, rhythmically bursting, or quiescent. Despite this...
متن کاملBursting Activity in Neocortical Networks
Most types of electrographic epileptiform activity can be characterized by isolated or repetitive bursts in brain electrical activity. This observation is our motivation to determine mechanisms that underlie bursting behavior of neuronal networks. Here we show that the persistent sodium current (Na P) in mouse neocortical slices is associated with cellular bursting, and our data suggests that t...
متن کاملThe Role of Excitatory and Inhibitory Synaptic Connectivity in the Pattern of Bursting Behavior in a Pyramidal Neuron Model
The connections between excitatory and inhibitory synapses are significant for generation of busting activity in a pyramidal neuron model. We have suggested in previous studies that a reduced neuronal model of synaptically connected neurons could produce repetitive bursting activity. We have also suggested that the modification of the balance between inhibition and excitation by synaptic weight...
